The 2012 Fall TV Season

Can you believe that the new Fall TV season is upon us already.  So far, I'm trying to catch up with Grimm and Supernatural so that I'll be ready for their respective premieres.  I think I've been hitting a high percentage with my choice for shows the past couple of years (the networks would tend to disagree), having little time for TV that isn't really good or isn't only 30 minutes and is enjoyed by my wife..  I've broken down my viewing schedule by day and labeled which shows are brand new, which are returning favorites, and which I'm most excited about.

Sunday
Returning
     The Simpsons (Sept. 30 @ 8)
The Walking Dead (Oct. 14 @9)

New
     666 Park Ave. (9/30 @ 10)

Prognostication: I bet 666 Park Avenue sucks a bunch, at best being a campy romp.  I'm somehow still watching The Simpsons and pray that The Walking Dead's 3rd season kicks it up a notch.

I'll Always Remember... The Simpsons because it has been around almost as long as me.

Monday
Returning
     HIMYIM (9/24 @8)
     Castle (9/24@10)

New
     Partners (9/24@8:30)
     Revolution (9/17 @10)

Prognostication: HIMYIM starts to wind down, Partners is tolerable (I want to support you Michael Urie!), and Revolution is hamstrung by its
major network bosses, meandering around until NBC forgets its still on.

I'll Always Remember... HIMYIM because it so closely followed my own trek through young adulthood.

Tuesday
Returning
     New Girl (9/25 @9)
Don't Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23 (10/23@9:30)\
     Sons of Anarchy (9/11 @ 10)

New
     Go On (9/11 @ 9)
     Vegas (9/25 @10)

Prognostication: New Girl continues to be mildly zany.  I decide I really                                                      like Don't Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23.  Go On makes me sad while Vegas is boring.

I'll Always Remember... that TV shows also aired on Tuesday.

Wednesday

Returning
Supernatural (10/3 @9)
NOVA (10/10 @9)
American Horror Story (10/17 @10)
Psych?
South Park (9/26 @10)

New
NOTHING!!

Prognostication:  Wednesday continues to be a great night of                                                         television regardless of the lack of new hotness.

I'll Always Remember... South Park due to its overwhelming cultural relevance.  True story:  to graduate from high school, we needed to carve a big wooden panel.  Mine: Stan, Kenny, Kyle, and Cartman watching a pig and elephant having sex.  I think it's still hanging proudly above the dining hall.

Thursday
Returning

30 Rock (10/4 @8)
Burn Notice (11/8 @9)
Person of Interest (9/27 @9)
The Office (9/20 @9)
Parks and Recreation (9/20 @9)
It's Always Sunny In Philly (10/11 @ 10)
The League (10/11 @10:30)

New
Last Resort (9/27 @8)

Prognostication:  The Office dies a slow death.  Sunny in Philly continues to be tastelessly hilarious.  All other comedies continue a sloppy downslide.  CBS continues to produce a decent action/drama despite the fact that the senior citizens that make up their target audience probably can't use most of the tech shown on Person of Interest.

I'll Always Remember... the lyrics to "Dayman" (a-aaa-aaaaaaaahhh!)

Friday
Returning
Community (10/9 @8:30)
Grimm (already started @9)
Fringe (9/28@9)
Haven (9/21 @10)

Prognostication:  Friday night will make me laugh, make me think, and make me highly entertained.  Then everything will be canceled leaving a void in my heart.  No one tells you that having children can't make up for the loss of a good TV comedy.

I'll Always Remember... that Community meant something special.  Here's an analogy for those of you smart enough to remember how to solve them.

Cheers : me :: Community : Owen (a.k.a., a classic show, spoken fondly of by all who saw it, that I vaguely remember watching as a child and that, as an adult, I can brag about having seen "when it was originally on TV...because I am just better than you")

Saturday
Returning
Doctor Who (9/1 @9)

Prognostication:  BBC America still hates people with big TVs, wishing us Yanks would watch our Doctor Who import on a tube TV, just like they watched the original.  Seriously, where is your HD feed? I know it exists!  Despite being on Saturday, I will watch this with my mom on Thursday and have a great time.  P.S. I'm a bit weirded out by my mother's crush on Matt Smith; she'll deny.

I'll Always Remember... The 2nd and 3rd seasons of Doctor Who, literally some of the best science-fiction episodes the world has ever known.  And the other seasons are pretty kick-ass as well.

In Conclusion
Man, I am just not watching that many new shows.  Of the six brand new to air, only two are comedies and I'm already wary of the episodes of Go On I've seen.  The rest are dramas and I'm doubtful that I can keep up with four additional hour-long shows that my wife has no interest in.  I secretly hope most of them are crappy so I can ditch them.

My new TV-watching rules state: 1) If I can't even watch the pilot with half-interest, I don't continue to watch the show 2) If I actively rail against how bad the show is, I don't continue to watch the show.  3) Following three episodes, the Bionic Woman rule is in effect: wishing the show would be cancelled results in cessation of viewing.  I will never get those eight hours of my life back and time is too short for crap TV.

Of the returning shows, technically, three are new since I never watched them when they aired and am either giving them a chance or frantically catching up on their backlog on Netflix (I've finally caught you, Grimm!).  NOVA has been on for like a billion years but my thirst for knowledge can't be contained and, as vast as it is, sometimes the Internet fails to teach us new things as efficiently as an hour of television.

I'll check back in after a month or so to see what continued to stay on my TV watching docket.  But, what are you watching?
